How Much Does It Cost to Run a Ceiling Fan?

A ceiling fan costs about 1 to 3 dollars a month to run, drawing 10 to 75 watts depending on blade span and speed setting. At the U.S. average residential electricity rate of about 17 cents per kWh, a 50-watt fan running 8 hours a day adds up to roughly 2 dollars a month. The actual figure depends on your local rate, how many hours the fan runs, and whether you offset the air conditioner while the fan is on.

The formula

Electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours. The math is straightforward:

cost per hour = (watts / 1,000) x electricity rate

A 50-watt fan at 17 cents per kWh costs 0.85 cents per hour. Run it 8 hours a day and that is about 6.8 cents per day, or roughly 2 dollars over a 30-day month. Low speed typically cuts wattage in half or better, so switching down one setting can noticeably reduce the cost if you run the fan long hours.

Wattage by blade span and speed

Blade span determines motor size. The nameplate wattage printed on the motor housing or in the manual is the maximum draw at high speed; low and medium speeds pull less.

The fan-and-AC tradeoff

Ceiling fans do not lower room temperature. They cool people through the wind chill effect, increasing evaporative cooling on the skin. The EPA Energy Star program certifies ceiling fans that move more air per watt than standard models. Certified fans use about 60 percent less energy than conventional fans while delivering comparable airflow. In practice that often means 20 to 35 watts instead of 50 for a standard-room fan.
